Black Panther DVD Commentary Reveals An Important Detail About Killmonger

Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther are ahead!

Even though Avengers: Infinity War is currently taking the world by storm, let's not forget that it hasn't even been a full three months since another Marvel movie came out that performed impressively both critically and commercially. One of Black Panther's most praised elements was Michael B. Jordan's Erik Stevens, a.k.a. Killmonger, who has been heralded as one of the MCU's best villains. Unlike his cousin T'Challa, Erik, born N'Jadaka, was raised in Oakland, California by his father N'Jobu, who was killed by his brother, T'Chaka, when he betrayed the Wakandan kingdom. But some of you may have been wondering while watching Black Panther where Killmonger's mother was. Thanks to the movie's commentary track, we've learned that she was in prison during the prologue and later died. Director Ryan Coogler explained:

The idea was when you see those guys talking over the paperwork in the beginning of the film, they're talking about a way to break her out of jail. The idea was they never got her out, and she passed away in prison, so Killmonger didn't come up with a mom either.

In case you need a Black Panther refresher, Prince N'Jobu, one of King T'Chaka's War Dogs, was sent to the United States as an undercover agent. While there, he fell in love with an American woman, and together they had N'Jadaka, a.k.a. Erik. As time passed, N'Jobu became convinced that Wakanda's isolationist policies were harming the country, so he began planning a revolution and hired Ulysses Klaue to steal some vibranium. This resulted in T'Chaka coming to America to confront N'Jobu over his treachery, and the encounter ended with N'Jobu's death. Erik wasn't in the apartment when his father was killed, but now that we've learned that his mother was also still in prison at the time, that means he became an orphan, making his backstory even more tragic.

Losing both his mother and father, as well as never inheriting his royal Wakandan birthright, led to Erik growing up filled with rage, desperate for revenge and determined to carry out his father's vision. As an adult, he became the skilled black-ops soldier known as Killmonger, and his plans finally came to fruition in Black Panther's present day story, where he defeated T'Challa in combat and temporarily seized the Wakandan throne. T'Challa eventually stopped Killmonger, but rather than be healed and spend the rest of his days in prison, Killmonger decided to die a free man. While his goals were nefarious, what made Killmonger such a compelling villain is that his motivations were understandable, and this added fact about his mother makes him slightly more sympathetic.

Black Panther will be available for digital download starting May 8, and the Blu-ray/DVD copies will hit shelves on May 15. But if you're dying to see T'Challa and some of his allies now on the big screen, you can buy a ticket for Avengers: Infinity War, which is about to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide.

In celebration of the Digital HD launch of Black Panther immediately (May 8) and the upcoming Blu-Ray and DVD launch on May 15, Collider unveiled an unique clip from the Black Panther audio commentary by writer-director Ryan Coogler, who opens up about Killmonger's tragic upbringing.
Black Panther: What Happened to Killmonger's Mother

Black Panther happens right after Civil War. There's a recap in the beginning that shows the five tribes uniting to be Wakanda and explaining why they have hid their identity from the world. They also showed this flower that gives the Black Panther unlimited strength. Flashback to 1992 in Oakland, CA.

The Black Panther home video release comes equipped with plenty of behind-the-scenes content and featurettes that reveal much more about the film, its characters, its story, and how it all came together after being stuck in development hell for 24 years.

Disneys New Streaming Service Is Finally Casting Its First Movie

Disneys New Streaming Service Is Finally Casting Its First Movie

As the media landscape continues to change, and an exponentially increasing amount of content competes for our dollars, it takes a lot to make a splash. Yet a cannonball-sized splash is what Disney is expected to make when it launches its own streaming service next year. The Netflix competitor will feature the studio's vast library, as well as new original series and movies made specifically for the platform. As 2019 approaches, one of the first of those original movies has begun casting. Disney has tapped Grace VanderWaal for the lead role in the movie Stargirl.

If you're unfamiliar with that name, that's because this will be Grace VanderWaal's acting debut. The 14-year-old first came onto the scene when she won America's Got Talent two years ago by singing her original songs while playing the ukulele. Since then, she has released an EP and debut album, and she is touring with Imagine Dragons this summer. Stargirl director Julia Hart, whose latest film Fast Color premiered at SXSW this year, was sold on Grace VanderWaal almost from the start. According to Deadline, the young singer beat out 700 other girls to land the lead role of Stargirl.

Stargirl is based on a young adult novel of the same name by author Jerry Spinelli. Told from the point of view of a boy named Leo, Stargirl tells the story of the titular character who, after years of home schooling, enters a public high school. She captures the imaginations of her peers with her eccentricities, kindness and individuality. The character of Stargirl also plays the ukulele, just like Grace VanderWaal. But as with all popular things, there is a backlash and her classmates turn on her, resulting in Leo compelling her to just be normal. The story stresses the importance of individuality and being yourself. Stargirl also spawned a sequel titled Love, Stargirl, so you can bet that may be coming down the line should Stargirl perform well for Disney's streaming service.

Judging by her performance on America's Got Talent, it is clear that Grace VanderWaal has talent, at least in the musical department. If that holds true for acting, and the huge casting process for Stargirl indicates that it does, then this film that holds such an important message for a young audience is off to a good start. The other thing about Stargirl is that it sounds like the right kind of title for this streaming service.

A story like this may not get a lot of traction in the blockbuster-heavy theatrical release slate, but it will have an opportunity to find its audience on Disney's streaming platform. Sweet stories with this kind of message actually remind me of Disney Channel's Original Movies that once were proving grounds for young stars. It is cool that among the Star Wars series and Marvel properties that will anchor the service, there is still room for these types of stories.

Stargirl will be shot in Arizona and New Mexico, with principal photography set to begin on September 24. For all the latest on Disney's upcoming streaming service and children reminding you how talentless you are, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

The Very Important Deadpool 2 Scene That Almost Didnt Happen Because Of Technical Difficulties

The Very Important Deadpool 2 Scene That Almost Didnt Happen Because Of Technical Difficulties

The following contains spoilers for Deadpool 2.

Deadpool 2 had more great moments than you could count, but one of the best almost didn't happen. The end credits sequence of the film is getting a lot of, well, credit, as being one of the best among the crop of superhero movies, but quite possibly the best moment was when Deadpool uses Cable's time travel device to go into the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and assassinate that version of Deadpool. It turns out, they had trouble getting the scene they needed to use, for the insane reason that the movie was actually shot on film. According to Ryan Reynolds...

We had a dick of a time trying to get the actual raw footage though from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie was shot on film, it wasn't shot on digital so it was harder to get. We were sitting there on the Fox lot, the exact piece of the movie we need had been damaged on whatever the transfer was, so we had to go to some backup which was in some vault somewhere in the middle of the country, the United States, and we ended up finally, at the last second inputting it into the movie. For me, I was literally losing sleep over it though, I was thinking 'oh my god, how are we going to do this, am I going to have to call Hugh and ask him to shoot this chunk that looks exactly like a movie he's already done?' I can't think of a worse hell for a human being to do.

X-Men Origins Wolverine is less than a decade old, but it's old enough that the way movies were shot then is quite different than it is today. If the film had been shot digitally then getting the scene they needed would have been no trouble at all, but film is fragile, and there aren't just a million copies of movies shot that way sitting around. This meant that getting the scene they needed to insert into Deadpool 2 wasn't all that easy.

There is an almost unfortunate side effect of the fact that Deadpool 2 was able to get the scene they needed. Fans have wanted to see Ryan Reynolds Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine on screen together ever since the first Deadpool movie came out, and if they had actually had to ask Hugh Jackman to redo the scene from Origins, it could have technically happened.

While Ryan Reynolds thinks that having to recreate a nearly ten-year-old movie would have been hell, it turns out, hilariously, that if it had come to that, only Hugh Jackman would have needed to look as he did back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds tells the Empire Film Podcast, that he wouldn't have had to have his mouth sewn closed again.

Ironically, my side was fine. His side, the one shot we needed of him going, you know, 'Wade?' as he's looking at the bizarre Baraka-pool thing, we just didn't have.

In the end, the scene worked out and it only increased the fun in what was already a hilarious end credits scene. If you want to go see it again, Deadpool 2 is in theaters now.

As a result, for years New Jersey had no TV stations because that would have interfered with the New York stations. But by 1948 the FCC has issued nearly 100 TV licenses, and there was growing concern about the finite number of channels and the frequency-interference problems.

Henry Cavill Explains Man Of Steels Controversial Zod Death

Henry Cavill Explains Man Of Steels Controversial Zod Death

If you had to point to a moment that embroiled the DC film universe in controversy from the start, before it even was a cinematic universe, it would be the end of Man of Steel. After the massive Battle of Metropolis, which caused damage on an insane scale, Superman was forced to kill General Zod, snapping his neck to save an innocent family from his heat vision. For the big blue boy scout to take a life in this way ran counter to the character's ethos for many fans, as Superman is often defined as a hero who doesn't kill. But for actor Henry Cavill, this act wasn't a violation of Superman's creed, but the catalyst for it, as he explained:

The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, 'I don't care if it's impossible again, I'm gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.

As Henry Cavill told Square Mile, he sees the act of killing General Zod in Man of Steel as the event that cements the no-killing rule in Superman's mind. Not some idealistic lesson from his father, but having firsthand experience of what it means to kill someone is the thing that makes him have that rule in the first place. From that moment forward, understanding the ramifications, Superman vows to never do it again. It's from here that he began the transition to the traditional Superman who never kills and is a beacon of hope and good that we all know.

This reasoning does make logical sense within the context of the film. Man of Steel is the origin story of Henry Cavill's Superman. He isn't some seasoned pro, but someone who is just learning who he is, what he's capable of, where he comes from, and who he is supposed to be. Therefore, this is the first time he is ever confronted with having to kill someone.

I'm sure Superman purists may take umbrage with this reasoning and think that Superman's belief in never killing should be innate, and part of his upbringing and who he is. It shouldn't be something that he has to experience to make up his mind about. But being staunchly against something in the abstract versus being faced with it in a real-life situation are two entirely different things.

We see Superman pleading with Zod to stop, we see his anguish as he makes the choice and in the wake of it. He isn't some cold-blooded killer, but someone who was faced with a horrible decision to either kill or let innocents die. There is an argument to be made that to be faithful to the character he shouldn't have been put in such a situation in the film or should have found another way, but personally within the context of the scene as it stands, I saw it as him having no other option.

I'm sure this will be debated forever but hopefully we'll eventually get a Man of Steel 2 to see more of Henry Cavill's Superman and his journey. In the meantime you can check out our guide for all of the latest from DC's movie universe.

How If Beale Street Could Talk Reminds Regina King Of A Classic TV Show

How If Beale Street Could Talk Reminds Regina King Of A Classic TV Show

If you've seen If Beale Street Could Talk then you know that it's one of the most original love stories ever put on the big screen. The film focuses on Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne), a 19-year-old pregnant woman whose life long friend and now fianc, Fonny (Stephan James) has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. As we follow Tish and Fonny's love story, we also see the efforts of Tish and her family to prove Fonny's innocence as the young couple struggles to keep their love alive through near impossible circumstances.

While the movie is far from a comedy, it turns out that Oscar-winning star Regina King, who plays Tish's mom Sharon, actually feels that the strong family bonds exemplified by the Rivers family (which is also comprised of Colman Domingo as dad Joseph and Teyonah Parris and sister Ernestine) remind her of those of a popular sitcom family from a classic show. Here's what King had to say:

The Rivers family is a family that exists, but even now, in 2018 when this comes out, we don't get the opportunity to see that family; where the father is there and the mother is there, and the children. You know Good Times? It's like that. That was a [TV] family in the '70s. They were poor, but there was a lot of laughter in the home, music in the home. I always say the Rivers are very similar to the Evans family!

I have to say, as I was watching the special features on the Blu-Ray for If Beale Street Could Talk (which is out now), I was very surprised to find that Regina King could make any comparison between the Rivers family in this sad, yet hopeful and lyrical love story and the Evans family from Good Times, which ran from 1974 through 1980 on CBS. But, after seeing how King manages to make the connection I can certainly understand how she came to such a conclusion.

As King mentioned, the Rivers and Evans families both share an easy closeness and are capable of having lots of fun with each other. Both families also deal with poverty and the dire circumstances that can cause, especially when things go wrong, but each group is also completely dedicated to supporting its members and showering them with as much love as possible to help them get through all the trials that life throws at them.

As you might imagine, getting a cast together that feels like a real family can be difficult, and director Barry Jenkins, who spoke about If Beale Street Could Talk during the same featurette, explained how the cast became like a real family during shooting.

Filming it, it was really important in the casting process to cast these actors who could literally, legitimately, you know, become a family. So, casting Regina King and Colman Domingo and Teyonah Parris, like, if you were on set with us you would see they all kind of huddled around KiKi, because this is KiKi's first role. She was literally the baby of the family.

No wonder the positive feelings of love and never-ending support for one another, no matter the situation, came through so well in If Beale Street Could Talk. If you want to check the movie out for the first time, or give it another watch, it's available right now on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD.
