The Incredible Number Of Showings Avengers: Infinity War Has Already Sold Out

It's been clear for a long time that Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a big deal at the box office. Not only does the upcoming Marvel movie bring together a slew of MCU heroes, but it also happens to be the start of a duo of culmination movies that are going to take the MCU in a totally different direction. Interest in the film is high, so high that there have been talks the movie could compete with Star Wars: The Force Awakens behemoth box office during opening weekend. In addition, the movie has already beaten recent winner Black Panther when it came to the first 24 hours of ticket pre-sales. Now, about a month later, the movie shows no signs of stopping, and Fandago reports it has already sold out at over 1,000 screenings in the U.S.

Big movies often sell out in theaters on opening weekend, but having over 1,000 showings sell out a week before release is a giant feat. Big movies in the States typically open on more than 3,000 screens, and Infinity War is a big movie among big movies. It's anticipated to open in 4,200 theaters across the country; still, selling out 1,000 screenings of the movie a week ahead of release is incredible. According to CNN, theaters are even adding showtimes to accommodate audiences, and says that one theater in New York has even added a 3:05 a.m. screening of the latest Marvel film. So, if you are a night owl, there's will be plenty of ways to see Infinity War in the city that never sleeps.

As noted previously, Avengers: Infinity War isn't even out of the gate yet, and it has already been breaking ticket sales records. In addition, early estimates related to the movie said it could make up to $200 million on opening weekend, but more recent estimates have indicated the latest Marvel flick could make between $235 and $255 opening weekend. If the latter estimates hold true, Avengers: Infinity War could top that of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made a whopping 247.97 million during opening weekend. Either way, it's going to be a big April for movie theaters, as the previous April record holder when it comes to opening weekends was Furious 7, which made $147 million during opening weekend.

It's clear that Infinity War is going to make a lot of money this weekend. A thousand sold out screenings in advance of release is clearly a big number and people have been excited about the movie on social media and even on our site for several weeks. The only question left to be answered is: How much of a hit Avengers: Infinity War will be? Luckily, we'll find out how the weekend's box office did this Sunday, and we'll find out how the movie did on preview night in just a few short hours.

We have talked and written about the fact that horror movies are hot in 2018, but few horror flicks to that have debuted this year have honored the classic slasher genre quite like The Strangers: Prey at Night. The film served as a total love letter to classic slasher cinema like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Black Christmas, and that grounded element of the story is what made the film so downright terrifying to star Christina Hendricks. In fact, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Hendricks addressed the down-to-earth and random nature of the horror and explained:

To me it was, it was how completely random it was that someone could just show up and kill you for absolutely no reason that it had nothing to do with the devil or God or. So, they're monsters or aliens. It's literally just, it could happen tomorrow because people are crazy and because you could just have bad luck. So, to me that it's the most terrifying idea in the world.

That's kind of the entire point of The Strangers world, isn't it? Both movies begin with one of the titular slashers arriving on a doorstep to ask, "is Tamara home," and in both cases, the question leads to a full-blown assault that leaves seemingly innocent victims dead merely because they were home. Despite all of the creepy ghosts and goblins that the horror genre has become known for, this sense of realism stands out as the thing that makes The Strangers: Prey at Night so creepy to Christina Hendricks.

This is a stark contrast to other subgenres of horror, particularly with regards to the styles of horror movies that we have seen debut this year. Though The Strangers: Prey at Night is a gritty horror thriller set in an authentic world, 2018 has mostly been defined by movies about demons (Insidious: The Last Key), curses (Truth or Dare), aliens (A Quiet Place), and demonic cults (Hereditary). Even the other notable tentpole slasher film set to debut later this year (David Gordon Green's Halloween), toys with elements of the supernatural in how immortal Michael Myers seems. Amid all of these otherworldly horror romps, The Strangers: Prey at Night stands out as one of the most plausible.

Looks Like Namor The Sub-Mariner Could Finally Appear In The MCU

Although characters like Spider-Man, Hulk and the X-Men usually come to mind first when thinking about Marvel Comics, it was actually Namor the Sub-Mariner that arguably kicked off this epic mythology when he debuted in April 1939, months before the Golden Age Human Torch and Captain America were introduced. However, over the years it's been unclear if the Marvel Cinematic Universe could use the character, but apparently we've now reached a point where there aren't any issues with bringing him in.

While speaking with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, reporter Erick Weber learned that Namor could make an appearance in the MCU. However, before any of you start celebrating, Feige added that he and the MCU brass are still figuring out if and when the Atlantean hero will show up. In other words, there aren't any concrete plans for Namor just yet, but it's still good to know that MCU has access to him.

In the 2000s, Universal Pictures started developing a Namor the Sub-Mariner, but nothing ever surfaced with that (pun slightly intended). By 2014, Kevin Feige said that the film rights to the character had reverted to Marvel Studios, but there were contracts and deals that still needed to be sorted out. Earlier this year, Feige maintained that there were still "complications" in play (similar to the issues surrounding another solo Hulk movie), but evidently in the months since then those have been solved if Feige says there's thought being poured into what to do with Namor.

For those unfamiliar with Namor the Sub-Mariner, like DC's Aquaman, he is the son of a human father and an Atlantean woman, the latter being the daughter of Emperor Thakorr. Unlike Aquaman, rather than being raised on the surface, Namor grew up in Atlantis and eventually became the prince of the underwater nation. Officially classified as a mutant in the comics, Namor's powers include super strength, breathing underwater, an extended life span and using the tiny wings on his ankles to fly.

Another thing that distinguishes Namor the Sub-Mariner from Aquaman is that rather than fit firmly in the superhero category, he treads the anti-hero line more. There are times where he's protected humanity, but on other occasions, he's attacked the surface to exact vengeance for perceived crimes against Atlantis. Outside of the comics, Namor has appeared in numerous animated TV shows and video games, but obviously featuring him in the MCU would introduce him to a lot of people.

Whether Namor the Sub-Mariner were to lead his own movie in the MCU or have a supporting role in another, I think it's definitely worth bringing him during Phase 4 or beyond. We've had plenty of Marvel movies set on Earth, but none have delved into the mysteries that lie in its oceans. Just like what Aquaman is doing for the DC Extended Universe, Namor can open up a brand-new realm to explore in this franchise.

It's also worth noting that ever since Namer was re-introduced in the Silver Age of Comics in Fantastic Four #4, he's had particularly close ties with Marvel's First Family. Since the Fantastic Four and X-Men properties will be integrated into the MCU once the Disney-Fox deal is in effect, maybe Namor could appear in a Fantastic Four movie, and then branch off his own later down the line (similar to what was being planned for the Silver Surfer after Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer).
