What's Happening With Edge Of Tomorrow 2, According To Doug Liman

With the trend of nostalgia proving endlessly popular and profitable, there is no franchise that seems truly dead. This is especially exciting for the fans, who have hope for their favorite film's future. One major sequel that's currently in development is the follow up to Doug Liman's sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow, which hit theaters in 2014. The sequel is currently being titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, with both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt set to reprise their roles in the upcoming blockbuster. I got to catch up with Liman at San Diego Comic-Con, where he revealed what's happening with Edge of Tomorrow's highly anticipated sequel. He said,

We're working on the script. We have a story I really love.

Well, this is exciting. While it's currently unclear when Live Die Repeat and Repeat will finally arrive in theaters, it seems that the upcoming film's script is getting close to done. So strap on your exoskeleton armor and get ready for another epic sci-fi adventure through space and time.

Doug Liman's comments are sure to excite the many moviegoers who saw and loved Edge of Tomorrow when it arrived in theaters a few years ago. The director/producer crafted a thrilling psychological journey, while also giving Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt plenty of time to kick ass and take names. And considering the first film's complex ending, there's plenty of narrative strings to pull at.

Edge of Tomorrow is set in the not-too-distant future, when alien creatures known as Mimics have invaded planet Earth. Tom Cruise's Major William Cage goes through a sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, where he continually dies, and resets the same morning. Eventually the hero uses this to his advantage, and trains in order to save the planet from invasion.

In the end, Edge of Tomorrow reset once again, presumably giving its heroes another shot at happiness. It's a controversial and somewhat confusing finale, which is why the fandom would love to return to Doug Liman's fantastic world with Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have also continued to work and gain fans in the years since the film hit theaters, and their shared interest in reprising their roles has kept excitement up.

What Transformers Fans Will Get Out Of The New Bumblebee Spinoff

The Transformers franchise is set to go back in time later this year when Travis Knight's Bumblebee debuts in theaters. Moving away from the main continuity established by Michael Bay, the film will be set in the 1980s to explore the earlier years of Bumblebee's adventures on Earth. The film will shift a lot of what we already know about the overarching Transformers franchise, and according to Knight, it will embrace that era to honor the Transformers mythology in a big way. The Kubo and the Two Strings director explained:

So, what I was kind of trying to do with this film because it's set in the 80s, was harken back to the great, original, G1 vibe and feeling and tone. So, there are definitely Easter eggs for fans who are down with that sort of thing. There's a lot of continuity between this and the film's that Michael has done. But the film does stand on its own.

The Transformers franchise has firm origins in the 1980s, and it looks like Bumblebee won't shy away from that idea. As the original Transformers cartoon started back in 1984, the film will embrace that specific setting and go back to its roots and offer a feeling reminiscent of those early years. It won't completely reboot the work done by Michael Bay in the first five Transformers movies, but it will "stand on its own" and tell a story that feels far more similar to the classic Transformers vibe.

This is something that other Bumblebee insiders have emphasized in their remarks about the film over the course of its development. In fact, while speaking out about Bumblebee's setting last year, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura also used the term "G1" to describe the old-fashioned feel of the story. Instead of upping the size and scale of the movie after the release of Transformers: The Last Knight, they're scaling things down to honor the source material and do something that involves "more time with less robots."

Of course, it also helps that Travis Knight was already a fan of the Transformers mythology when he signed on for the Bumblebee spinoff, which allowed him to handle the sheer size of the Hasbro research material. The director continued his conversation with Collider at CinemaCon and explained:

It's incredibly dense, the mythology. You know when I came aboard the Hasbro cast they gave me the Transformers bible which is like this enormous, thick tome. And I sort of looked through it [like] 'I can't read all of this.' But, blessedly for me, I was the guy who grew up playing with the toys, watching the cartoons, reading the comic books. So, a lot of it is kind of in here anyway.

As previously mentioned, Bumblebee will take the Transformers franchise back in time to examine the origins of the yellow Autobot. The film will see him meet a young girl named Charlie Watson (The Edge of Seventeen star Hailee Steinfeld) in a California junkyard while on the run in 1987. The two eventually go on to develop a friendship with one another, while a government official named Agent Burns (John Cena) closes in on them.

5 Things We'd Love To See In The Incredibles 3

It was a long wait for Incredibles 2, but the highly-anticipated sequel finally arrived last week, and clearly the passage of time didn't decrease the enthusiasm for this property. In addition to being met with critical acclaim, Incredibles 2 made over $182 million domestically opening weekend, and at the time of this writing, it's made over $345 million worldwide. Just like its predecessor, we can add this to the list of Pixar's wins. That said, after seeing the movie, some of you may have asked if Incredibles 3 is on the way.

All we know at the moment is what director Brad Bird told EW: that he wouldn't ever rule out making Incredibles 3, though it's entirely possible that more than a decade could pass until the next one as well. Post-Toy Story 4, Pixar has five release dates carved out between 2020 and 2022, with one of them reserved for a suburban fantasy. There's no guarantee that Incredibles 3 could end up taking any of those other four dates, though given how well Incredibles 2 has performed at the box office, you can be sure the folks over at Pixar are giving serious consideration to a threequel. Assuming such a project gets the green light, here are some of the things we'd like to see in Incredibles 3.

A Time Jump14 years may have passed in the real world between The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, but in that world, both movies took place back-to-back with one another, as Incredibles 2 showed how the Parr family's fight with The Underminer went down. That lack of distance ended up working nicely in the sequel, but there should be a little separation between that movie and Incredibles 3. That's not to say there should be a massive time jump, where we get something like Violet and Dash as adults who have superpowered kids of their own. Instead, Incredibles 3 should only hop forward a couple years, to when Violet is a high school senior, Dash is about to start his high school journey, toddler Jack-Jack is still energetic (but not quite as dangerous as he was as an infant) and the world is used to superheroes being legal again. Enough time will have passed that things still familiar, but also have extra room to add even more new elements

A Supervillain From The Past ReturningSo far the two main antagonists that the Incredibles movies have used were both individuals that the Parr family (or any superhero, for that matter) didn't battle in the good ol' days. Sure, Mr. Incredible had already met and dismissed Buddy, but it would be many years before the youth became Syndrome. Incredibles 3 should change things up by bringing in a super villain from back in this world's golden age of superheroes. Maybe there was a baddie that Mr. Incredible or Elastigirl dealt an especially brutal beating to, forcing them to lick their wounds and go underground just like the superheroes eventually did. Now that superheroes are back in the light, this villain decides to resurface and step up their game to finally seek revenge against our esteemed protagonists. Just don't let it be Bomb Voyage. That guy works as a funny gag for a few minutes, but not an entire movie.

The Formation Of A Superhero TeamAside from Frozone, The Incredibles didn't have any starring superheroes outside of the members of the Parr clan, which makes sense given that it was a movie about family and Syndrome had killed almost all the heroes from the previous generation. Incredibles 2, on the other hand, introduced some of the new generation's crop, most notably Voyd, who was arguably Elastigirl's biggest fan. Unfortunately, due to the actions of The Screenslaver, a.k.a. Evelyn Deavor, these new superheroes never had a legitimate chance to fight alongside each other until the end of the movie. For Incredibles 3, let's see them battling the forces of evil side by side in a superhero team, i.e. this world's equivalent of the Justice League or the Avengers. The overall focus would still be on the Parr family, but at least this time we could see them properly engaged in teamwork with others rather than being turned into mind-controlled tools.

Make It A Globe-Trotting AdventureMost of the action in The Incredibles took place on Syndrome's island, and Incredibles 2 hopped around between several cities. Incredibles 3 needs to kick things up a notch by taking our heroes all around the world. Remember how Avengers: Age of Ultron bounced between Sokovia, South Africa and South Korea? Incredibles 3 needs to do something on that scale, with the heroes traveling to different areas of the globe to deal with whatever villains or threats have presented themselves. It's fine if one of those locations remains a city like New Urbem, but it would be nice to get a better sense of what the rest of this version of Earth looks like. Maybe Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and the gang could even meet superheroes from other countries.

The Underminer's RevengeThe Underminer appeared at the end of The Incredibles to cause trouble, and while the Parr family did their best to prevent him from robbing the Metroville bank in Incredibles 2, he managed to escape, and the superhero family was instead arrested by the police. Look, we don't expect Underminer to return in Incredibles 3 as the big bad who brings the superheroes to their knees, but it would awesome if he resurfaced to wreak even more destruction. Taking a cue from Marvel villain Mole Man, made he could have an army of subterranean minions serving him. Let's also remember that John Ratzenberger is Pixar's good luck charm, having been a voice in all the studio's feature films. Unless Incredibles 3 wants him to voice someone new, then bringing back Underminer is a no-brainer.

How X-Force Can Distinguish Itself From The Deadpool Movies, According To Drew Goddard

Writer and director Drew Goddard has previously said he's a one-film-at-a-time kind of filmmaker, and with his incredibly captivating crime thriller, Bad Times at the El Royale, now out in theaters, excitement for his next project is running high. His name has been attached to Deadpool spinoff X-Force for some time, and making his mark on a superhero team-up lead by the Merc with a Mouth is an intriguing undertaking for Goddard. It looks like he can't wait to delve into it, with these words:

The thing that was exciting about X-Force, in particular, was the fringe element of what X-Force was to the X-Men. I still feel like there is real opportunity to explore that. What Deadpool is to the superhero movie, X-Force can be to the team superhero movie.

In the sometimes-tiresome superhero genre, Deadpool was a unique gem that dazzled viewers in a refreshing way, mixing raunchy comedy with vigilantism and heartfelt romance. It seemed like a one-of-a-kind, one-in-a-lifetime kind of release until Logan, and then Deadpool 2 recreated the same sort of magic. Next, Drew Goddard wants to do the same with an ensemble superhero film, which so far seems like more of an extension of Deadpool 2 as Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz are all said to reprise their roles as Deadpool, Cable and Domino, respectively.

However, while early reports point to production starting this month, right now, plans have been delayed due to the Fox/Disney merger, and Goddard isn't sure when it will get moving again. In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the writer/director showed his genuine excitement to work with the main cast and work with a property that has a special freedom to stray away from the typical genre tropes and deliver varying tones laced throughout it. Goddard found the surprising heartfelt moments in Deadpool to be the secret weapon of the film.

X-Force would draw from the '90s comic book series of the same title, which Drew Goddard admits he loved and still has quite a few issues stored away in his garage. The series positioned itself as an edgier X-Men, as the team formed by Cable use a more black ops approach to crime fighting. Goddard has, of course, taken on Marvel properties before. He created the first Netflix-Marvel television series, Daredevil, and he also previously wrote a Sinister Six film which never saw the light of day when Sony started teaming up with Marvel after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed.

With the incomparable Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool at the center and the Bad Times at the El Royale writer/director helming, X-Force looks like it would certainly be something special. With a different eye on X-Force compared to the Deadpool franchise, the spinoff could easily set itself apart from the others movies while still feeling part of the same universe.
