Sylvester Stallone Is Making His Own Superhero Movie

Superhero movies are all the rage, and more and more actors are getting involved with making them. Case in point, Sylvester Stallone is eyeing a new project that would have him star in a superhero movie. Stallone first got his taste of the genre in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but this new project would put him in the lead role as an aging superhero.

Per Variety, MGM is developing a superhero drama called Samaritan. Sylvester Stallone is attached to star and produce through his production company Balboa Productions. The story centers on a young boy who believes he has found a superhero who went missing after a massive battle 20 years ago. One would assume that Stallone is the missing hero in question.

The script was written by Bragi F. Schut, whose previous credits include Escape Room, the horror-thriller that released earlier this year. The film grossed $115 million worldwide.

No director is currently attached to the project and that's about everything we know about Samaritan. It's not too often the a superhero movie based on an original idea rolls around, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays with audiences when IP-based content is the main moneymaker these days.

If you are excluding Judge Dredd (which you should), this will be Sylvester Stallone's first time as the lead in a superhero movie. The actor previously appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a leader of the Ravagers, and he was set up for potential appearances in future films. It's unclear if that will ever happen, but now Stallone has a superhero movie all his own.

Before Samaritan arrives in theaters, Stallone has a number of projects on the docket. The actor has been working on getting ripped for Rambo 5: Last Blood, which will be the final adventure for one of Stallone's most popular characters. Stallone also has Escape Plan: The Extractors, the third film in the Escape Plan franchise. Stallone openly admitted that the second film was garbage, but he's got high hopes for this one!

Sylvester Stallone and his production company are also developing a film based on boxer Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight champion. Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act in 1910 for transporting a woman across state lines for immoral purposes, and he was posthumously pardoned by President Donald Trump.

It's unknown when Samaritan will arrive in theaters, but stick with CinemaBlend and we will keep you updated on the latest movie news as soon as that information becomes available. It could be a few years until the movie premieres, so don't miss out on any of the awesome films that are coming out this year. You can find them all in our 2019 movie release guide.

How Much Money Welcome To Marwen May Lose At The Box Office

How Much Money Welcome To Marwen May Lose At The Box Office

Most of the holiday box office stories have focused on Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns or Bumblebee. That makes sense given all three films are part of popular franchises and had interesting openings for different reasons, but all that analysis has largely obscured Welcome To Marwen and its less than ideal first weekend. In short: its future prospects are not promising, and it looks like it could lose upwards of $50M.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film cost somewhere between $40M and $50M to make. If you've watched television recently, you're also probably aware it had a very healthy marketing budget. Unfortunately, the film was hit with mostly bad reviews, and the word of mouth wasn't a whole lot better. That underwhelming buzz was only able to generate $2.4M for the film during its opening three days, which puts it near the bottom for 2018 in terms of lowest grossing opening weekends for a big budget movie, which sucks for a lot of reasons.

It's no secret that Hollywood has largely abandoned making pretty expensive movies. A high percentage of films are now either relatively cheap to produce or very expensive. The middle ground doesn't get nearly as much love as it used to, and part of the reason is because of exactly what happened here. Now, I'm not implying audiences failed Welcome To Marwen. By most accounts, the film has some serious problems, and with a ton of competition, it makes sense that people didn't see it. It's another entry, however, into a larger pattern, which is if you make a quirky movie that goes for something different, you really need good reviews to help out. Event films, niche horror movies and children's entertainment might be able to still find some success with negative buzz, but films that could be awards contenders usually do not. As such, they feel like a major gamble. For every Bohemain Rhapsody, there are several Welcome To Marwen's and because of that, those of us who like moderately budgeted movies designed for adults don't get as many films as we'd like.

It's likely Welcome To Marwin will do a bit more business moving forward. It's not expected to be a huge draw overseas, but maybe there's a little money there, plus potentially some money from home video, streaming services, etc. In the end, however, the final result almost certainly won't be pretty, and it'll be one of the low moments, at least financially, for Steve Carell and Robert Zemeckis' career.

In this list paragraph, I guess I should note one more thing too. Right after the box office initially broke, one of my coworkers asked me if I thought this made it more likely Steve Carell would join a reboot of The Office. I have no idea. Steve Carell is a great actor, and it'll take many more poor openings to take away any of his buzz. I can say, with certainty, however, that if an Office reboot were to ever happen, it would generate more buzz and attract more eyeballs than Welcome To Marwen.

Why The Spawn Reboot Wont Reveal Too Much Behind-The-Scenes Information

Why The Spawn Reboot Wont Reveal Too Much Behind-The-Scenes Information

A lot of comic book fans are looking forward to the long-rumored Spawn reboot, but they probably shouldn't look forward to hearing a lot about it before it hits theaters. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane says that, while production of the new movie is scheduled, there's always the possibility that the current schedule could change for any number of reasons and he's afraid if too much is known about the current plan, people might start to panic when those plans change. According to McFarlane...

If because of an actor's schedule, we got to move [the release date] or if for whatever reason, the shot takes a little longer, we got to move it. Then if you say too specifically what the day you give them, be a week or two weeks, then all of a sudden you'll read an article somewhere, and people say, 'It's a troubled production! Troubled, troubled production!

While this might feel like an overreaction, the fact is that overreaction is exactly what Todd McFarlane is apparently trying to avoid. Spawn isn't going to have the sort of budget that your traditional big-screen comic book movie has these days, which means the production is likely going to need to be flexible in order to stay within the confines of the money they have. While that flexibility would be perfectly normal on the set, from the outside looking in, it might appear to be a bigger issue than it actually is. We have seen things like that happen, such as literally anytime a movie goes back to do reshoots.

Considering the fact that Spawn is a green-lit movie that has a writer and a director, both Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and a lead actor cast in the role in Jamie Foxx, you'd think the movie might be a bit more set in stone. However, what the film doesn't have is a release date, which means the movie isn't necessarily working under a strict timetable to get production done.

Of course, that's not to say that we won't be getting any behind-the-scenes info on Spawn. Todd McFarlane tells ComicBook.com that he will be sharing some info from the set while he's directing the new feature. He can't say when or what, but he guarantees it will happen.

I'll be sharing some of the information, especially while I'm filming. I'm going to be there on the set with people....I'm going to share some of the fun of making a movie. So, yeah, we're scheduled. So, it's coming. You know, I don't have a date, but it's coming. We'll be open.

While we may not know what we're going to get, or when we might see it, if Todd McFarlane shares any details about the new Spawn movie, you can be sure we'll have it here at CinemaBlend.

Spawn Movie Reboot Is NOT An Origin Story | ScreenRant

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is firm in his conviction that the upcoming reboot film should not explain how the character of Spawn first came into existence. Though McFarlane has been quite outspoken about this point in the past, the legendary comic creator expanded upon this belief recently, saying that he's "exhausted by those (superhero) movies" that focus on the character's origin story.
