Shazam! Reviews Are In, Here's What Critics Are Saying

Shazam! Reviews Are In, Here's What Critics Are Saying

Charge up your weekend with the power of fresh Shazam! reviews. Critics are now free to move about the internet cabin, posting their full thoughts on DC's latest movie. Previous to this point, we saw some positive soundbite reactions on social media, but this is where you get the full context -- and often some scores/grades.

CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell gave the film 4 out of 5 stars. He raved about the casting of Zachary Levi as Shazam! but did mention the smaller scale compared to past DCEU movies, including lower stakes with Shazam!'s villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong):

Like Aquaman and Wonder Woman before it, Shazam! benefits tremendously from being allowed to operate outside of the DC Universe, while also acknowledging that it exists alongside movies like Man of Steel and Justice League. In comparison to those efforts, however, Shazam! can actually feel small. The stakes of the plot are relatively low, with Sivana being a threat to our hero but less of a danger to the world at large. Where Aquaman was intentionally epic in scope, Shazam! always maintains the feel of a neighborhood story, for better and for worse.

IGN's Jim Vejvoda noted that Wonder Woman and Aquaman bore the heavy weight of expectations, which was not a burden Shazam! had to carry. So it was able to be as carefree as a child and just have fun:

Shazam! is a DCs most joyful and sweet movie since the days of Christopher Reeves Superman, a funny yet earnest coming-of-age story about a boy who learns that, well, with great power comes great responsibility. So obviously, Shazam! doesnt reinvent the superhero movie, but its an undeniably fun time that left me wanting more big-screen adventures with these charming characters.

USA Today's Brian Truitt said Shazam! was probably the closest DC film yet to one of Marvel's projects, complete with a Spider-Man-esque lesson on "with great power comes great responsibility":

But, really, the high-flying showdowns and the holiday-themed action-packed finale (which is highly satisfying, though it goes on a bit too long) are secondary. "Shazam! works because of its emphasis on friendship and family: Mrs. Vasquez has a bumper sticker that reads Im a foster mom: Whats your superpower? that sums up the film's overall warm-hug vibe.

Hugh Armitage of DigitalSpy gave Shazam! four out of five stars, calling the "delightful" film DC's slickest and funniest movie yet. However, he echoed the note that the finale goes on a bit too long:

Best known for his horror movies, director David F Sandberg nevertheless brings flawless comic timing to Shazam!, while the movie also delivers a likeable message about the value of family, friendship and teamwork. Our greatest criticism is that the finale drags on longer than it needs to, but Shazam! is so much fun that it's a minor complaint.

Hoai-Tran Bui of /FILM gave Shazam! 8.5 stars out of 10, echoing the pacing issues, but also praising the pleasant surprise that Shazam! is more like a kid adventure than a superhero origin movie:

A raucous, charming kid adventure that is a delight to behold from start to finish, Shazam! feels like a throwback both to 80s comedies and to the superhero movies of the early 2000s, with abundant callbacks to both genres. But rather than playing like an appeal to nostalgia, Shazam! is more of a spiritual throwback that captures the sincerity and silliness inherent in the superhero genre, while delivering a heartfelt story about the power of found families.

Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press gave the movie 3.5/4 stars, pointing out some of the flaws while emphasizing that they don't detract from the overall experience:

OK, so its basically Big with superheroes and villains instead of businesspeople and girlfriends, but director David F. Sandberg has infused his film with so much heart and charm that it hardly matters. Even the deficiencies, like the sluggish beginning and the random, ridiculous villains, fade away under a haze of goodwill because unlike so many big spectacle action pics with sequels in mind, Shazam! actually sticks the landing.

Todd Gilchrist of Birth.Movies.Death was more critical, saying DC's movie needed more adult guidance:

Conversely, Im not sure if Shazam! is the exact superhero movie that a kid would make for him or herself, or its a perfect encapsulation of studio groupthink trying to anticipate what that imaginary kid wants. Unfocused, noisy and way, way too chatty, director David Sandbergs adaptation of the DC character supplies plenty of routine superhero theatrics and when I grow up wish fulfillment, but its eagerness to explore the notion of family at the expense of real character development - and the seeming absence of adult guidance both on and off screen - delivers far too little in the way of true inspiration.

However, he also wrote it was almost disappointing that Shazam! wont be crossing over with Justice League in the near future, since the character brings a childlike sense of wonder and fun to the DCEU.

Overall, the reviews still sound quite positive. Since the embargo for Shazam! just dropped, we'll have to wait a bit to see the full picture on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's currently at 97% from 32 reviews. The CinemaScore from moviegoers won't show up until opening night.

In terms of how much Shazam! might make after its April 5 opening? Well, you know projections are often wrong. Many thought Captain Marvel was going to open to "only" $100 million and it made a lot more than that on its way toward The Billion Dollar Club.

At this point, early tracking suggests Shazam! will open anywhere from $40 million to $50 million in the first weekend of April. It's not expected to reach the lofty heights of the DCEU's Aquaman, but the reviews have been positive and it looks like a good time. What more do you want? Besides a lot of money so they can justify more movies?

Shazam! opens in theaters April 5 as one of the many movies heading to the big screen that month, and in the rest of 2019.

Chris Pratt Says Star-Lord Doesn't Regret His Big Infinity War Moment With Thanos

Chris Pratt Says Star-Lord Doesn't Regret His Big Infinity War Moment With Thanos

Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War will be forthcoming and prevalent in this article, as the header implies.

It's been nearly five weeks since Avengers: Infinity War first hit theaters. The movie has done well with fans and critics alike, but while people have been generally happy with the film, they are slightly less happy with some of the characters, or more so the decisions that characters made during the course of the event film. For the last few weeks, Chris Pratt has taken some flack for the decision Star-Lord made to confront Thanos right when they seemed to have Thanos where they wanted him. Weeks later, Chris Pratt is still defending Star-Lord, and he recently said the character definitely doesn't regret his decision to confront Thanos. Per what Pratt said in a recent interview:

Look -- the guy watched his mother die, he watched as his father-figure died in his arms, he was forced to kill his own biological father. And now has suffered the loss of the love of his life. So, I think he reacted in a way that's very human, and I think the humanity of the Guardians of the Galaxy is what sets them apart from other superheroes. I think if we did it a hundred times I wouldn't change a thing.

The moment in question featured some of the Guardians and the Avengers, plus Doctor Strange, who had traveled to Titan to face Thanos. They came up with a haphazard plan to distract him, then hold him down, giving them a brief window to pull the Infinity Gauntlet off of his arm. Amazingly, the strategy worked, but then Peter Quill blew it when Gamora's sister Nebula revealed Gamora had gone off with Thanos and had not returned. Star-Lord couldn't handle his emotions in front of Thanos, leading Thanos to use the opportunity to take back the Infinity War gauntlet and pursue his goal of destroying half of the life in the universe. A lot of Marvel fans have not been happy with Quill in the time since.

Still, while Chris Pratt is defending the movie moment, he's also kind of taking a shot at some of the other superheroes. They can't all be as emotional (read: relatable) as Peter Quill, or really most of the other Guardians of the Galaxy, as Gamora, Drax and Rocket all come with their own baggage. In Infinity War, Groot seems to be dealing with teenage emotions. Then there's Mantis, who can feel and even change the emotions of others. It's a common thread for the Guardians and it very much makes sense that Star-Lord would be the one to react emotionally to Thanos, at least according to Chris Pratt.

The news comes a few weeks after Chris Pratt also took to social media to talk about the big Avengers: Infinity War moment. At the time, he made light of the script, joking around that he would just have to "go and fuck [him]self." In the movie the moment is pretty serious, and now Chris Pratt has revealed he's actually kind of "sensitive" about the whole thing, especially as people's thoughts about the moment don't seem to be dying down anytime soon. He also told the Radio Times,

I guess you could have the movie end a half hour earlier if you wanted, but it seemed like people really liked this. And also, I blame Thanos, OK? Jeez, how come he's not getting any blame? Clearly I'm very sensitive about this.

He's not the only one. A certain blonde-haired hero has also taken some flack for a mistake in the movie, as well. As for the Guardians, it was only recently that Drax actor Dave Bautista mentioned that he is confirmed both for the still-untitled Avengers 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well. We'll have to wait and see how all of the characters figure out how to get out of the pickle they are currently in with Thanos, and we'll find out when Avengers 4 hits theaters in 2019.

Deadpool 2's Creators Explain Why The Movie Didn't Need A Traditional Villain

Deadpool 2's Creators Explain Why The Movie Didn't Need A Traditional Villain

The following contains spoilers for Deadpool 2.

There's a lot that Deadpool 2 does that is quite different from what we're used to seeing in traditional superhero movies. One of those things is the movie's lack of a traditional bad guy. The film has multiple characters who could be viewed as the antagonist, but none is the comic book villain that we're used to seeing our heroes battle on the big screen. Of course, Deadpool is never afraid to subvert a trope for comic effect, but in this case, the decision to not have a standard bad guy came simply from the fact that they didn't need one, as all the characters they had were already going to conflict with each other. As screenwriter Rhett Reese says...

We decided we had enough people with differing motives butting heads that we didn't really need a traditional mustache-twirling villain. We had the evil headmaster, we had Juggernaut, we had Firefist himself as an adult in the future, we had Cable --- and sometimes Deadpool is his own worst enemy in some ways. So we thought, 'Why feel trapped into the trope of a villain who wants to conquer the world? Why not just have the particular goals of these characters come into conflict?'

The primary conflict in the film comes from Cable, who wants to take down Firefist as a boy before he grows into the man who kills Cable's family. Neither of them is necessarily a villain in that case. Firefist is a child has yet to do anything wrong, but Cable's motivations are understandable and are far from evil. The headmaster of the orphanage where Firefist has grown up is truly evil, and Juggernaut is an unapologetic bad buy too, but neither of them is really a main character, the former is simply a motivator for Firefist, and the latter acts as a bad influence, but little more.

Nobody here is looking for world domination or ultimate power, they just have things they want, and those desires collide with the desires of others, leading to the film's conflict. Deadpool just wants to keep a kid alive, but also wants to stop him from doing something terrible. As co-writer Paul Wernick tells the L.A. Times, the lack of a traditional villain makes the film more challenging to create, especially since Deadpool 2 is dealing with some real emotion, made extra challenging by the movie's focus on humor.

As a filmmaker, I loved the challenge of not having a conventional villain. As you start to peel the onion back, you realize the real villain is all of us because we're not showing [Russell] the compassion that he needs. That's the big idea in a movie full of crazy action and fart jokes, but it felt right and earnest. The first film was a love story and this movie needed a real genuine emotional hook.

We know that early versions of the Deadpool 2 script included a larger role for the X-Men villain Black Tom Cassidy, but in the end, it was decided that he simply wasn't needed to make the movie work.

Deadpool breaks the superhero movie mold every chance it gets and this is just one more place where that happens. Overall, it clearly works.
