The Charlie's Angels Reboot Is Going To Have More Than 3 Angels

Big action movie heroes such as James Bond, Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt have successfully graced the screen for many years with their blockbuster hits. There's just one probelm: where are the kickass female action stars? On the heels of the MCU and movies like Atomic Blonde, the upcoming Charlie's Angels reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska and Elizabeth Banks could be the heroes the genre needs. Stewart recently divulged that her newly assembled girl gang won't be the only fierce women in the film, the world will be full of them. In her words:

It's not just three. Women across the entire globe are connected and helping each other.

Freshly-named Charlie's Angel Kristen Stewart explained in an interview with Variety that the reboot will feature a whole network of angels who work together to get the job done. When speaking about the re-imagining, Stewart has expressed before how the film will show how women can work together, snd now we know a little more about what she means. While the new Charlie's Angels will certainly center on the team of three women, they will likely have run-ins with more ladies in various locations around the world ready to provide back up. This kind of world in an action film sounds unique and refreshing, especially since it signals that the cast will be even more female than one might have realized.

The film follows the early-00's McG franchise starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. While the movies were fun and entertaining, the film landscape has changed, and the same approach to Charlie's Angels won't faire as well as it did almost 20 years ago. Kristen Stewart said the upcoming reboot will be indeed fun and feel like a Charlie's Angels movie, but it will be more modern and "woke" compared to its predecessor. While the previous films had the women in hyper-realistic action situations that were over-the-top and campy, the new Charlie's Angels women will be believably strong and well within their ability to pick a fight and win.

Elizabeth Banks is leading the reimagining as director, co-writer and actress (as she will portray a female Bosley) in Charlie's Angels. She has said that she is determined to do right by the franchise and make it really matter this time. Ex-angels Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore have voiced their excitement for the reboot, as Liu said it will be a "positive result for women". One Big Problem The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is About To Have

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built its success on taking a structure that has been successful in the comic book world for decades, that of the interconnected universe, and translating it to the big screen. However, the franchise is about to be forced to deal with a major change, and it's something that comic books can't help with. The MCU is going to need to replace some heroes, and they're never coming back.

The "replacement hero" is a fairly common move that numerous superhero comics have used over the years. If things start to get a little stale or slow, the well-known man behind the superhero mask gets killed off or severely injured to the point that they can no longer play the part. However, since the comic book is well known and popular, it continues on, with a new character playing the part of the hero.

As we sit on the verge of the release of Avengers: Infinity War at the end of this week, and with Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe coming to a close next year with Avengers 4, Marvel is faced with something similar as several contracts are getting ready to expire. We fully expect to see characters like Steve Rogers and Tony Stark written out of the franchise one way or another. They might get killed, they might retire, but somehow, they will cease to be significant parts of these films.

However, like the comics, these characters are incredibly popular and it's difficult to imagine the MCU without an Iron Man or a Captain America. This has led many to suggest that other heroes could take on these mantles when the likes of Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. say goodbye. Perhaps Sam Wilson will get promoted from being Falcon to becoming the new Captain America, something which has happened in the comics. Some, like myself, have suggested that Letitia Wright's tech genius Shuri could be the new Iron Man. Either or both of these things could very well happen, however, there is a fundamental difference between when this happens in the comics and when it happens (if it does) in the movies.

In the movies, the original heroes are never coming back.

You see, there's an unspoken contract between the comics and the reader every time a hero gets replaced. They'll be back eventually. The replacement hero is always a short break before something happens that allows the original hero to return. The death was faked. Time travel resets things. Magic heals wounds. One way or another, the hero you knew and loved will be back to fight again. The replacement hero only usually works because the original hero is going to return. Part of the point is to remind readers why they loved the original hero in the first place. That won't be what happens in the movies. Marvel is wading into uncharted territory when it comes to the idea of what to do when this current crop of heroes takes their leave. Whatever choice, or choices, are made are going to be entirely new for Marvel, with no guarantee of success.

Even if nobody is actually killed off in the next two Avengers movies, the actors seem ready to say goodbye to these roles they've been playing for a decade. Even if they were willing to return, eventually they would just become too old to helm a major action franchise. Comic book characters never age. Real people do.

Marvel has a few different options on how to handle this. They could recast the parts and have them continue on as if nothing changed, simply having the heroes played by other actors, but it's been said that at least in the case of Robert Downey Jr. that won't happen. It seems unlikely to work well for most of the major Avengers, these actors have become synonymous with the roles. Alternatively, they could simply remove the characters from the MCU entirely. They can move forward focusing on other characters and see the world that has been created move forward without a Captain America. The third option would be to see the heroes taken over by new people, such as the aforementioned Sam Wilson becoming the new Captain America, but if that happens, then he is, and will be, the new Cap, until such time as Anthony Mackie himself is ready to leave the MCU.

If any of the actors leaving the MCU see their characters survive, there's always the possibility for a brief return in the future. Tony Stark could come out of superhero retirement for one important mission in five years. Even if characters do die, the various ways heroes have returned in the comics could be used to bring them back on film, but it would only be for a special event, not the long term.

In the end, when the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes whatever major changes it has in store, those changes are for the long term. The MCU made history by creating the concept of the cinematic universe. It's about to do so again, but going to places that even the comics have never been: Real, permanent, change.

How Much Money Rocketman Might Make On Its Opening Weekend

When Bryan Singer was fired, director Dexter Fletcher came aboard Bohemian Rhapsody to steer the film into port. That Freddie Mercury biopic wound up becoming a historic success, and now Dexter Fletcher is back with another musical icon for Rocketman. The Elton John biopic arrives at the end of the month and is currently looking to launch with $20 million.

Rocketman is tracking at a $20 million opening weekend, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, some are predicting that it could enjoy a slightly higher liftoff with $25 million. Either end of that range would be a solid, respectable opening for the Taron Egerton-fronted film, even if it wouldnt blast the film into the stratosphere in its opening weekend.

Of the new releases opening May 31, a debut of $20-$25 million would likely put Rocketman behind Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is currently tracking to open in the low $50 million range. Godzilla may win the weekend crown, but Rocketman does provide an interesting bit of counterprogramming for those not interested in the MonsterVerse.

Last years Bohemian Rhapsody opened in first place with over $50 million and went on to make $216.4 million in North America and over $900 million globally. Although not a biopic, Bradley Coopers A Star is Born also provides a relevant comparison. That Oscar-snubbed film opened in second place opposite Venom with $42.9 million and went on to basically match Bohemian Rhapsody domestically with $215.3 million and a great, but less crazy impressive $434.2 million worldwide.

So Rocketman doesnt look like it will open quite as big as those two music films. Its also opening at the beginning of the more cutthroat summer season, but $20+ million would still be solid, and as is proven what seems like every other month, tracking is inexact and things can change. Bohemian Rhapsody was tracking in the mid-$30 million range before it rocked the box office to a much bigger opening.

We dont yet know what kind of buzz Rocketman will enjoy come release time that could affect its opening weeknd. Bohemian Rhapsody received mixed reviews, but Rami Maleks performance as Freddie Mercury was praised as worth the price of admission. That film also benefitted from the amount of play Queens music still enjoys.

Elton John is no niche, indie artist though, and his recognizable tunes can only help Rocketman. Dexter Fletchers film also features a lead performance in Taron Egerton as Elton John that could stir up some buzz since the actor does all of his own singing for the role.

Rocketman debuts at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15 and Fandango is hosting advance screenings of the movie on May 18. So well have a better idea around then of what the word is on the quality of the movie. But the mere fact that advance screenings are happening so close to the world premiere and two weeks prior to the theatrical release date is hopefully a display of confidence in the film.
