Todd Phillips Joker Movie May Start Filming Sooner Than We Thought

DC and Warner Bros. have a lot of fats in the fryer right now, but maybe the projects that are getting the most attention at the moment are the two that involve the Joker. Yes, Warner Bros. is trying to make two separate movies about the Joker, one of which is unconnected to the Jared Leto version and the DCEU. That Joker movie will be an origin tale directed by Todd Phillips, and reportedly starring Joaquin Phoenix. The studio seems set to move forward with the project, and current rumors suggest it will begin filming this September in New York City.

It was recently reported that Warner Bros. and DC is interested in making a movie about Jared Leto's version of the Joker, who made his debut in Suicide Squad. This is not to be confused with Todd Phillips' Joker movie, which the studio is also interested in making. That particular project will be directed by The Hangover director, and was originally reported as being a Joker origin movie in the veins of a Martin Scorsese film. No actor has officially been attached to star, but Joaquin Phoenix has been rumored to be involved for some time.

It seems the studio intends to make both Joker movies. It was originally reported that Todd Phillips' Joker movie was looking to begin filming later this fall, but now Omega Underground is claiming that the movie will start production in September. It's important to keep in mind that this is a rumor, and Warner Bros. has made no indication on what the filming date will be.

I would wager that if the studio opts to give the project a green light, then we can probably look forward to some kind of announcement at San Diego Comic-Con. Warner Bros. has plenty of opportunity to grab the spotlight (considering many franchises won't be there) and with the Aquaman trailer already set to debut, DC likely has more announcements in store.

Some big changes are happening over at DC Entertainment, with Geoff Johns moving to a new role amid leadership changes, so we'll see how this all affects the movies that are on the way. The Joker origin movie is definitely something that has lots of attention and curiosity at the moment, so it'll be exciting to learn where the project goes from here.

Ant-Man Director Peyton Reed Reveals The Help He Got From Stan Lee

Stan Lee always made a point to cameo in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but it turns out that wasn't all he was doing on set. Ant-Man director Peyton Reed recently revealed that the man behind so many of Marvel's great characters assisted him in filming Ant-Man by discussing with him some of the tips and tricks that had been learned drawing the character for the comics. Specifically, the importance of framing a shrunken Ant-Man with normal sized objects in order to impart to the audience the difference is size. According to Reed...

On the first day, I actually got to have a great conversation with him about the conversations he had to have with artists all the time about putting something in the frame that tells you about the scale of Ant-Man. And low angles are going to be your friend and all these sort of rules he had in his head to tell whoever it was going to be like Jack Kirby or Don Hecker or whatever artist was drawing at the time.

The entire gimmick of Ant-Man is, of course, the fact that he can shrink down to a tiny size. The joy of reading a comic book or seeing him in a movie is getting to experience that strange world of a man the size of an insect. The environment is just as much the star of an Ant-Man story as the superhero, something which Stan Lee apparently took some time to relate to Peyton Reed as Reed was getting ready to direct the first Ant-Man movie.

And as Peyton Reed explained during a recent Q&A session following a screening of Ant-Man and the Wasp (via IMAX), this conversation was useful, as many of the same issues that can crop up when creating an Ant-Man comic were also important when creating an Ant-Man movie. Just because the medium and the technology were different, didn't mean the fundamentals of the character had changed.

I said we have the same issues in this movie with visual effects. If you're doing a medium shot on Ant-Man when he's shrunk, he no longer feels tiny. He feels normal. So all those issues he dealt with in the comic panels, we were dealing with in sort of a moving, visual, more sophisticated way but they were the same exact issues.

Overall, it seems fair to say that these issues were overcome in both Ant-Man films. It was nearly always clear what the audience was looking at, and what size our characters were, due to the way that everytime objects appeared incredibly massive, or sometimes incredibly tiny, in order to convey that information.

We know we'll see Ant-Man again very soon in Avengers: Endgame, though how the character is important, or how is size will play a role, we still don't know. We'll find out this April.

Looks Like Netflix Won't Be At Cannes Again This Year

The friction between Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival came to a head last year when the streaming service skipped out on the festival entirely because Netflix movies are ineligible to compete for the Palme dOr. That meant that acclaimed films from big name filmmakers like Roma and The Other Side of the Wind did not premiere at the illustrious festival where so many beloved films got their start. Now, a year later, it again looks like Netflix will be skipping Cannes.

According to Variety, Netflix will be absent from the French festival for the second year in a row, with no new movie premieres either in or out of competition. This is a result of the existing issues between the two parties, which have yet to be sorted out. And, even if Netflix and Cannes had come up with an agreeable solution, the movies that Netflix would theoretically premiere at Cannes simply arent ready yet.

At one point, it was expected that Netflixs most prestigious original 2019 movie, Martin Scorseses The Irishman would be ready for, and an ideal participant in, the May festival, but the arduous task of digitally de-aging the cast for half of the film will require more time. So The Irishman wouldnt be ready for Cannes, regardless, and will likely premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September instead.

Another possible candidate for Cannes was The Laundromat, Steven Soderberghs new film about the Panama Papers starring Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman. David Michds The King starring Timothe Chalamet would have also been an obvious choice for Netflix to enter in the festival. Alas, the issues arent sorted and these movies arent quite ready, either.

The issues between Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival first came to the fore in 2017 when Netflix movies Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories were accepted into the festival in the competition lineup. This resulted in backlash from French theater owners, because in France there is a 36-month minimum window between a films theatrical release and when it can show up on a streaming platform.

Cannes gave in and required that movies could not compete unless they would eventually be released in French theaters. So Netflix pulled out of the festival last year. In the time since, Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival have been quietly negotiating in friendly talks to try to work out their differences and find a way for the streaming services films to come back to the festival, but as of yet those issues are still unresolved.

Although Netflix will not be premiering any of its big 2019 movies at Cannes, it does still plan to send an acquisition team to France, so the streaming service may be opening its wallet even if it isnt bringing anything to show itself.

Even without Netflix bringing its heavy-hitters to Cannes, there are still plenty of reasons to pay attention to Mays festival. Among them are James Grays Ad Astra and Quentin Tarantinos Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which are both expected to be in competition.
