Why Captain Marvel Will Be The First Theatrical Movie On Disney's Streaming Service

Why Captain Marvel Will Be The First Theatrical Movie On Disney's Streaming Service

Disney has a lot of bases covered when it comes to its movie offerings, from live action remakes/adaptations of its classic animated movies and Pixar offerings to installments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchise. This has cemented Disney as the biggest filmmaking titan in Hollywood, and next year, the company will jump into the streaming game with its own subscription service. We've already learned over the course of this year about some of the original content that will be available exclusively on the Disney streaming service, but it's now been clarified that with next March's Captain Marvel, every Disney movie released in theaters will also flow directly to the service, right as the studio's deal with Netflix expires.

Back in 2012, Disney and Netflix signed an agreement that gave the latter rights to air all of the former's live action and animated movies that were released in 2016 and afterwards. But once Disney announced that it was launching its own streaming service, the countdown began for the Disney/Netflix deal to expire, and when 2019 rolls around, that'll be it for this alliance. Although Netflix exclusive Marvel TV shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage will remain on that service, The New York Times reports that on the movie side of things, Captain Marvel, the MCU's penultimate Phase 3 entry, will kick off the trend of Disney's theatrically released movies heading straight to the streaming service once they've enjoyed their time in theaters. Obviously there will be many (if not all) of Disney movies from decades past that will also be available on the service, but on the streaming side of things, this is the only place you'll be able to find the Mouse House's theatrical offerings.

If you go on Netflix right now, you'll find Disney movies like Cars 3, Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but their time there is wrapping up soon. In the Marvel corner, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War still haven't premiered on Netflix, but even if they, and Ant-Man and the Wasp when it arrives on home media, do get some Netflix time, it will only be weeks or months at most. Disney is preparing to shake up the streaming world in a major way, and along with original content like a live action Star Wars TV series and the Lady and the Tramp remake, including its latest theatrical movies will be a good way to entice subscribers. That's not to say that there aren't still issues, as Disney is reportedly trying to buy back the TV rights to the Star Wars movies from Turner, but at least where its future releases are concerned, Disney has that covered.

The Disney streaming service is set to launch sometime in fall 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress. The 1990s-set Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8, 2019, and if you're interested in finding out what's coming out later this year, look through our 2018 release schedule.

Why Samuel L. Jackson Loved Working With James McAvoy On Glass

Why Samuel L. Jackson Loved Working With James McAvoy On Glass

While there are plenty of sequels and crossover films currently in the works, none had a path quite as fascinating as M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming thriller Glass. At the tail end of his recent hit Split, it was revealed that the film was set in the same universe as Shyamalan's 2000 comic book inspired drama Unbreakable. The crossover film was soon announced, serving as a sequel for both Unbreakable and Split. Fans have been eager to see both films' casts combine, including the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy. Jackson recently revealed how much he enjoyed working on the upcoming film, especially as McAvoy balanced his character's various personalties and even had conversations with himself. As Jackson told it,

As good as I like to think I am or what I do and how I do it, watching somebody transform characters in front of your eyes and have an argument with four different people is pretty amazing.

While Samuel L. Jackson may be a living legend with an Oscar nomination and three Golden Globe noms, there are still moments that humble the 69 year old. James McAvoy's work as a man with dissociative identity disorder just happens to be that kind of moment.

Samuel L. Jackson's comments to Collider make a great deal of sense, especially if you managed to see M. Night Shyamalan's Split. Through the film audiences saw McAvoy play seven or so characters, regularly flipping between the three strongest of Kevin's personalities. The final moments of the film finally saw him engaging in a fascinating onscreen conversation with himself; a final payoff after watching Casey survive her encounter with The Beast.

With characters like Bruce Willis' David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson's Mr. Glass interacting with Kevin, it would be interesting to see if Kevin's personalities also make their debut. He was teased to share his mind with a whopping 23 identities, so there's a ton of storytelling possibilities that M. Night Shyamalan can experiment with in Glass.

While moveigoers were able to see Kevin's personalities communication in Split, it'll be even more fascinating if other characters like Mr. Glass are also participating in the conversations. Although it would no doubt be a challenge for James McAvoy, it sounds like a great way to explore new facets of Shyamalan's fictional world. We'll just have to wait and see.

Most of Glass' contents are a mystery, although it appears that David Dunn's unbreakable man will be attempting to chase down and apprehend Kevin Wendall Crumb. But where David goes, so does Mr. Glass' evil schemes. Casey from Split will also be present in the narrative, as well as Sarah Paulson as newcomer Dr. Ellie Staple.

Glass will arrive in theaters on January 18, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Mark Hamill Confirmed For Star Wars: Episode 9

Mark Hamill Confirmed For Star Wars: Episode 9

Nobody was quite sure what the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi meant for the future of Mark Hamill and Luke Skywalker, but an announcement from Lucasfilm has just made a few things much clearer. The announcement officially lists the cast of the upcoming film, and among the names listed is Mark Hamill himself. Confirming that the actor, and therefore Luke Skywalker, will appear in Star Wars Episode IX.

There have been many theories about what happened to Luke Skywalker in his final moments in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it was clear that Luke was dead, having sacrificed himself to help the Resistance escape. Of course, death is never the end for the Jedi, but that detail was hardly conclusive evidence that Hamill would be back. It was also entirely possible that Lucasfilm could have tried to make Luke's return in Star Wars Episode IX a surprise by leaving him off the cast list, but instead, they've made it clear we will see Luke again.

Of course, that doesn't mean that Mark Hamill's role will be a particularly large one. We knew Mark Hamill would appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the guy didn't have so much as a speaking role. If Luke Skywalker will be playing the role that Obi-Wan Kenobi played in the latter two episodes of the original trilogy, as a Force Ghost communicating with the living, and that seems to be essentially confirmed now, he may not have more than one scene, though that scene could end up being a vital one.

Obi-Wan Kenobi said that being struck down would actually make him more powerful, though we don't necessarily see that power come through. Rey said she felt "purpose" in Luke's death at the end of The Last Jedi. Perhaps Luke isn't done with either of his two apprentices quite yet. He told Kylo Ren he'd be seeing him, after all.

It's also possible, of course, that we could see Luke appear in flashbacks. Both previous episodes have included flashback moments that included Luke, so it's always possible that could be where we see Mark Hamill again

It's wonderful to know for sure that Mark Hamill isn't quite done with Luke Skywalker yet, though he isn't the returning cast member that's the most surprising, as we also learned that Carrie Fisher will also be in the new film, by using footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens that went unused.

In addition to Hamill and Fisher, the rest of the core trilogy cast will be back, and the Lucasfilm announcement also confirmed the report that Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Two new actors joining them will be Richart E. Grant and newcomer Naomi Ackie. One name missing from the list was Keri Russell who had been previously reported to be in talks for a role. Perhaps those talks fell through, or perhaps they are still ongoing.

Star Wars Episode IX will begin filming August 1 with this announced cast, and is set to hit theaters in December of 2019.
