This Rotten Week: Predicting Hunter Killer Reviews

With David Gordon Green's Halloween set to dominate until we get to the holiday it's named for, Hollywood isn't putting up much of a fight this week. As a result, we only have one new wide release in store, with a hotshot submarine commander looking to avert a Russian military coup and a deadly war. Get ready for Hunter Killer.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

In a movie that should probably be called something like The Hunt for Crimson Tide Red October, Gerard Butler is a sub commander who stumbles upon a possible plot to start World War III. The world hangs in the balance as he and the dudes on his sub work to dismantle a Russian coup that threatens everything we hold dear. There are missiles launched, firefights aplenty, and everything else you'd imagine from a movie that just wants to blow stuff up structured around only the loosest of plots.

Early opinions on Hunter Killer are pretty much what you would expect. It's sitting at 40% with ten reviews posted, and it is likely to drop over the course of the week. Those who liked it complimented the pace of the film and seemed to generally understand the main goal was to just keep the adrenaline going at all costs. The rest of them just thought it stunk and bordered on barely watchable. I suspect more critics take the latter path as reviews keep coming in.

It was another win last week, though I suppose it's tough to take all that much credit considering a bunch of reviews were already locked away at the time of post. Halloween (Predicted: 83% Actual: 80%) marked an exceptional comeback for the iconic horror franchise, possibly setting the stage for even more Michael Myers in our lives. It touched on all of the nostalgic pieces of the original while also offering up more than enough scares for those first introduced to the masked killer. Critics loved it, and it will probably finish as one of the best-reviewed horror movies this year.

Next time around we've got Bohemian Rhapsody, Nobody's Fool, and Nutcracker and the Four Realms. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

There was only one movie on the docket last week, but it was an easy win with Hunter Killer (Predicted: 30% Actual: 36%). It didn't take an movie analytical genius to see this one coming down the pike. It was a Gerard Bulter-led submarine film about an oncoming WWIII threat.

Hunter Killer (2018) - Rotten Tomatoes

This week's Hunter Killer, which stars Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman in a thriller about a high-stakes submarine rescue mission, aims to join the ranks of those classics by combining geopolitics and good, old-fashioned blockbuster action. Unfortunately, critics say the film is neither thoughtful enough to fully explore any complex themes nor
