The Crimes Of Grindelwald Did Have The Lowest Opening In The Harry Potter Universe, But There's Still Good News

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was the number one movie at the box office this past weekend. Having said that, it wasn't exactly a smashing success. The sequel brought in just over $62 million, which is an all-time low for an opening weekend for the Wizarding World franchise. Having said that, there is an upside, as the film did bring in nearly $200 million more around the world, which, when combined with the domestic take, as well as the over $800 million that the first Fantastic Beasts movie did, puts the larger franchise over the $1 billion mark.

This fact does spotlight one thing that seems fairly clear about the Fantastic Beast movies as a whole, they're not really meant for us. The first movie in the franchise did over $800 million around the world, but less than 30% of that total came from North America. The rest came from overseas, with significant numbers coming from China, South Korea, and somewhat unsurprisingly, Great Britain.

Even if Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ends up being the lowest grossing movie ever based on a J.K. Rowling story, it doesn't mean the movie is going to actually have that small a box office total. If the international numbers continue for the next few weeks, the movie is going to be fine, even if the North American numbers don't go anywhere.

And with a couple of major releases coming up during the long Thanksgiving weekend, including Creed II and the very family friendly Ralph Breaks the Internet, it would seem likely that the new Fantastic Beasts is going to have some stiff competition.

It does make one wonder just what the issue us with these film and the domestic audience. Even the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them didn't have a massive opening weekend. It's not like all the crazy Harry Potter fans rushed to check out the new film and then went home disappointed. Many were clearly uninterested when this whole franchise started. Is the North American audience just done with the Wizarding World overall? Are we just not interested in the adventures of a character not named Harry Potter while others are? If so, why is that?

At the same time, the box office has been changing and becoming more global overall. North America is still the biggest, and most important, box office region in the world for Hollywood movies, but countries like China have already become major secondary markets and many analysts feel that the nation will eventually top the U.S. when it comes to box office dollars.

While Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald might be off to a slow start, it doesn't seem like the movie is in any real trouble. We're still going to get three more movies in the series and they'll probably continue to do well overseas, even if the domestic crowd doesn't care about them as much.

The Trickiest Part About Making Mary Poppins Returns, According To Rob Marshall

Making a sequel to one of the most beloved movies ever is already a tricky business, but it's one Rob Marshall decided he was willing to take on to direct Mary Poppins Returns. Our own Corey Chichizola had a chance to sit down with Marshall to discuss the new film, and the director told him that the trickiest part of the film was deciding when it was ok to directly reference the original film, specifically in the score, and when he needed to let the new film stand on its own. According to Marshall...

It was so strategic. We were very careful not to abuse that. Using material, music, or strains of material. Or even images from the first film. We knew we had to do it sparingly throughout. And that's what we did. We found places that we felt we had earned it. In fact, a lot of the strains of music like 'Feed the Birds' or 'Let's Go Fly A Kite' are little strains of music. We wait until the very end of the film. We feel like at that point, we've earned it. And you can't abuse that kind of thing. Otherwise you're just doing a remake, which is not what this is.

The reason Disney decided to make a sequel to Mary Poppins at all was certainly that the film is so deeply loved by so many. Fans will want the movie to make those references to the classic film they remember. At the same time, the new movie has to stand on its own and be its own story. Fans will want to keep their eyes and ears open as Rob Marshall says that those references are there but they're few and far between, as he didn't want to abuse nostalgia.

If you end up focusing too much on the old movie, as Rob Marshall says, the film just becomes a remake. Either that or your movie turns into an easter egg hunt that causes the audience to go looking for the references rather than actually watch the movie that was made.

Having seen Mary Poppins Returns already, and being a big fan of the original, I certainly noticed at least a few of the times that the score in the background included bits of music from the original film. It's incredibly well done and while the music wants you to hear the reference, it's not happening all the time, which makes those moments that you hear it feel special. I didn't notice the musical cues until later in the movie, which certainly does seem to imply that Mary Poppins Returns waited until it had earned those moments. I certainly believe it did.

The good news is that you won't need to wait too long to experience Mary Poppins Returns as the film opens in theaters on Wednesday. Check out Rob Marshall's complete comments in the video below.

Shaft Director Tim Story Wants To Bring Everyone Back For A Sequel

The Shaft franchise has given the world more than the original 1971 that kicked off Richard Roundtrees career as a bad ass, as well as the Blaxploitation movements first big success. In total, the franchise has seen four sequels, including both the 2000 and 2019 reboots of the series. So sequelizing this particular bad mother is something that Hollywood can dig, and has dug for almost 50 years.

Should director Tim Storys turn in the chair with this weeks Shaft turn out to be another successful entry in this historic series, hes definitely got some ideas that can be worked into a potential sequel. And one big idea, that CinemaBlend learned while talking to Story during the films press day, was this pitch for a truly family affair:

Id bring everybody back. I think, what was great at the end of this movie was you saw family come together. And when you see that, I dont see how you could do anything different than bring everybody back, and let everybody have a gun, and, you know, let the Shafts happen.

With Richard Roundtrees John Shaft, Samuel L. Jacksons second generation John, and Jessie T. Ushers J.J. all part of the action by the third act of Shaft, we get to see three generations of action kick into high gear. We also see them flashing identical outfits, walking across a street in New York City and even stopping traffic with their attractive jaywalking.

While the film leaves the obvious opening for the return of all the Shaft family members present and accounted for, that doesnt necessarily mean that a potential Shaft sequel would have naturally followed the path of bringing everyone back. If new writers are brought on board and/or Tim Story doesnt reprise his role as the franchises latest director, theres a chance a possible Shaft 2 may still not go that route.

Which is why its important for this weekends entry into the franchise does well, as Tim Storys idea to bring back John, John II, and J.J. sounds like the best way to keep things going. Even better, with the idea of family coming together present in Shaft, the sequel would be wise to have all of the main cast returning, as it would give Regina Halls Maya and Alexandra Shipps Sasha a chance to get in on the action as well.

Its already known that both Hall and Shipp would love to jump back into the franchise, as during our talk with them during the Shaft press day, both expressed their interest in getting to partake in the action. So a potential follow-up might just have the machine guns and glitter grenades that the women of the Shaft franchise want to inflict upon anyone who steps up against them and those they care for.

Most of all, the enthusiasm that Tim Story shares for telling this kind of Shaft story in a franchise thats already started to change itself into the vessel to do so, is too good to pass up. Shaft movies have made huge strides towards not only modernizing the action that represents a hallmark of the franchises history, but they also have become a more inclusive experience for a new generation. To continue down this path of expanding the family, and letting the Shafts be themselves, is a sure fire way of honoring the spirit of the past, while proceeding in the name of the future.

Again, well have to see what happens with Shafts opening this weekend, before any sorts of speculation can truly be had.
