Why Hans Zimmer Decided To Score Wonder Woman 1984

If you're reading this story, then there's a good chance that you're familiar with Hans Zimmer. The man is one of Hollywood's most famous composers, and in the superhero movie realm alone, he's delivered high quality music through the Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel and more. Despite saying back in 2016 that he was done scoring superhero movies, he changed his mind and boarded Dark Phoenix. Now Zimmer is also handling Wonder Woman 1984's music, taking over from Rupert Gregson-Williams, who handled the first Wonder Woman movie. Zimmer acknowledged while it felt weird to take Gregson-Williams' place on the sequel, it was important for him to reunite with Diana of Themyscira since he composed her DC Extended Universe theme music. Zimmer explained:

It was odd say to say 'yes' to because my friend, Rupert, I had worked really hard at getting Rupert the job on the first one. But remember the motif, the Wonder Woman theme is mine, actually. I wrote that damn thing. And we had done it live and it became more and more interesting. I just thought it was important to sort of finish it. And Patty [Jenkins] phoned me, and she had a really interesting idea as well. Again, the story she is going to tell, or she is probably right now on a set telling, it's a story you want to be a part of.

Hans Zimmer created Wonder Woman's theme music for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, our first time seeing Gal Gadot's Diana in action. Rupert Gregson-Williams handled putting the music together for the Wonder Woman movie, but Zimmer's theme was still used, for good reason. As Zimmer told Collider, his connection with that theme, along with director Patty Jenkins contacting him, ultimately led to him coming on to Wonder Woman 1984. It will be a long time before we hear even a sampling of what Zimmer puts together for the sequel, but given how iconic his Wonder Woman theme has become, one would image this bodes well for him scoring her entire adventure.

As you can tell from the title, Wonder Woman 1984 is winding the DCEU's clock back again to look in on what Diana was up to in man's world 34 years ago. No specific plot details have been revealed yet, but along with the eponymous heroine coming to blows with Kristen Wiig's Barbara Ann Minerva, a.k.a. Cheetah, the sequel will feature the return of Chris Pine's Steve Trevor, who is somehow still alive and hasn't aged despite seemingly perishing at the end of World War I. Wonder Woman 1984's cast also includes Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright reprising Hippolyta and Antiope, respectively, as well as Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel and Gabriella Wilde in undisclosed roles.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters on November 1, 2019, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates on how it's coming along. In the meantime, don't forget to look through our DC movies guide to find out what else the DCEU has in development.
