Paul Hogan Heading To The Big Screen For The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee!
A recent commercial for Australian tourism revitalized interest in the 80s classic Crocodile Dundee. Now, it looks like that goodwill is going to be used for something, but probably not what you were thinking. Paul Hogan, who played the title role in the 1986 film and a pair of sequels, is now set to star in The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee! However, this new movie isn't a Crocodile Dundee sequel, but instead a comedy that will see Paul Hogan play himself, or at least a fictionalized version of himself, as his career and reputation for playing the iconic character gets systematically destroyed just as he's about to receive a great honor.
The plotline of The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee! will see Paul Hogan being honored with a knighthood for his contributions to comedy. However, during a six week period immediately before the ceremony, Hogan will see his name and reputation destroyed. It's implied by Deadline that Hogan himself will be responsible for the chain of events that transpire, that screws everything up right before his knighthood, but that part is far from clear.
While fans of Crocodile Dundee will certainly be happy to see Paul Hogan back on the big screen in this Dundee-adjacent project, it's probably not the movie many were hoping for. Earlier this year a commercial for Australian tourism that aired during the Super Bowl took the form of a movie trailer for a nonexistent Son of Dundee movie that saw Danny McBride play the title role, but also included cameos in the lead up from basically every Australian currently working in Hollywood. The ad went over so well that many have wanted to see it become a real movie. If you didn't see it, check it out now.
While it's unlikely we'll ever see Son of Dundee become a thing, it is possible that one aspect of that ad could become part of The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee! Paul Hogan does say that he's "been honored to have many of my friends and colleagues, whose work I adore, agree to join us for this hilarious new adventure." Which implies that the new film could have a lot of names we know appearing in the movie. Perhaps we'll get some of the people who appeared in the commercial, like Chris Hemsworth, or those who appeared in the promotion, like Margot Robbie and Hugh Jackman, appearing in this film, even if they, like Hogan, end up playing themselves.
