Jon Hamm Is Interested In Playing Batman, With One Condition
Unlike Wolverine or Iron Man, when it comes to Batman, there is no one actor who everybody thinks of as the Caped Crusader. Six actors have portrayed Batman in live action on the big screen, and depending on what happens with Ben Affleck and Matt Reeves' Batman movie, number seven could be coming soon. There are some names that always come up as potential future superheroes, and one of them is Jon Hamm. The Mad Men actor just has that look that would make him well suited to both Batman and Bruce Wayne. It isn't just fans that would like to see the Don Draper performer don the cowl either. Jon Hamm himself is interested in playing Batman, but only under one condition, as he explained:
It depends on the script, what the story is. I am a huge comic book fan, always have been. I have read comic books since I was nine or younger. And I am pretty knowledgeable about a lot of them. And I like the genre, and I like when they are done well.
Jon Hamm's criteria for playing Batman seems pretty simple: he just wants the story to be good. That's probably a pretty solid rule to follow before signing on to any kind of project. In theory that should go without saying, but because comic book movies don't have a 100% success rate when it comes to quality, it bears mentioning. As Jon Hamm told The Hollywood Reporter, he is a lifelong fan of comic books and comic book adaptations. He noted that he loved Black Panther and that he watched the Legion TV series, so he has a natural affinity for the material. But like any good fan that knows his stuff, he doesn't want to be in something sub-par, he wants things to be done well for him to take part. That starts with a good script.
Now just because he is a comic fan and might be interested depending on the script, that doesn't mean that Jon Hamm strapping on a utility belt is imminent. He said that he has not had any official conversations about playing the Dark Knight. Hypothetically though, if he were approached, he seems keen on the possibility, as he explained:
I'd probably fit the suit. I'd have to work out a lot, which I don't love. But, I am sure there is an interesting version of that being out there. And if they wanted to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to do it: why not?
Jon Hamm sounds like he wouldn't take too much convincing to play Bruce Wayne as long as the script for the film was good, even if taking on the role would mean that he'd have to work out to fit in his Batman costume. So if you're listening, Warner Bros., all you have to do is tap him on the shoulder.
Even though Jon Hamm seems game to play Batman, there first has to be a Batman for him to play. For ages Ben Affleck has been rumored to be leaving the DCEU, and thus would not star in Matt Reeves' Batman movie. That may not be the case and Affleck may stick around, but if he doesn't, there is a job up for grabs. We don't know what that movie will be yet, so it's impossible to say if a Jon Hamm Batman would be right for it, but if the DCEU wanted to stay in the same sort of age range, the two actor's ages are only a year apart. DC is also doing standalone films, as evidenced by Todd Phillips' Joker, so maybe Jon Hamm could play the role in some sort of one-off. Of course, Superman is now also up for grabs, and Jon Hamm would also make a killer Man of Steel.
